Welcome to Top Deck!!

“How cool would it be to have a track on an aircraft carrier?” Several months ago, Vibin In Hawaii asked us that question. JS Robinson soon found a good 3D model of an aircraft carrier and he and I got to work trying to make this idea come to life. However, there was a big problem we had to find our way around. We couldn’t figure out how we were going to set up the heightmap so there wouldn’t be huge, ugly dirt walls covering the sides of the ship’s hull. So we moved onto other projects for the time being since we couldn’t really think of an answer at the time. Fast forward to late October, I learned how to animate objects, and when I animated water with moving waves I knew I had to make this idea work. I found out the solution to our problem was a lot simpler than we thought; just put the ship’s hull under the heightmap. This prevented me from being able to use the entire deck of the ship for the track, but I figured I’d find a way to make it all work. After a few months here it is, Top Deck. The answer to the question “What would a motocross event look like on an aircraft carrier?” I had a lot of fun and learned a lot making this project, and I hope you have half as much fun as I had making it 🙂
